Having just enjoyed the latest Netflix release Dumplin’, I got to thinking about the concept of self-confidence and beauty. Because they definitely go hand in hand!
The film is an adaptation of the bestselling book by Julie Murphy, about Willowdean – the plus-sized, teen daughter of a former beauty queen.
With Willowdean grieving the loss of her much-loved aunt (a confident, Dolly Parton loving, plus-sized woman) she decides to enter the local pageant in an act of rebellion. Partly against her own mother, but also against society and pageants in general.
In a tale which could have easily turned into a story of losing weight, makeovers and physical transformations, it doesn’t.
Instead, it’s a refreshing and warm message about not changing who you are – but rather encouraging girls to make themselves more of who they are.
And who better to feature in a movie about confidence, doing things differently and beauty, then Dolly Parton? The queen of confidence and wise words.
While Dolly Parton isn’t in the movie herself, she is a large feature of the film, and when interviewed by Entertainment Weekly, and asked about the message of the film, she had this to say:
