Famous Helen Keller Quotes on Happiness, Resilience & Courage

Helen Keller (1880 – 1968) was an American author, political activist, and lecturer. Born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, she became deaf and blind at the age of 19 months due to a severe illness. Despite these challenges, she grew to be one of the 20th century’s leading humanitarians and a co-founder of the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union).

At the age of seven, she began to work with her lifelong teacher, Anne Sullivan, who taught her to communicate using the manual alphabet (an alphabet used by spelling out words on the hand).

Keller’s incredible story of learning to communicate despite her challenges became well-known thanks to the efforts of Sullivan, who helped Keller achieve a level of education that was unheard of for someone with her disabilities at that time.

Keller attended Radcliffe College of Harvard University and became the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. She wrote 12 published books and countless articles on various subjects such as social issues, women’s rights, and blindness. She traveled to more than 40 countries and dedicated her life to helping others.
