A Level 10 Life & Aiming For Balance

Creating a balanced life isn’t about ‘doing it all’ perfectly

It’s about creating a life where all your most important life areas are going well – creating an over-arching balance to your life.

Sure, there are always going to be certain areas of our lives that seem to run smoothly, while other areas may feel like a constant struggle. Some people have no trouble with their finances and career, but they may struggle with their weight and relationships.

Or maybe, like me, all the important life areas felt ‘out of whack’ or unbalanced?

Just a few months ago, I was chasing my tail. Overwhelmed and feeling mediocre at everything. Nothing felt organized or calm, instead it all felt crazy and chaotic.

I was trying to juggle all of life’s ‘balls’, but I felt like I was dropping ALL of the balls and my confidence was at an all-time low.

So, I took a step back & considered all the key priorities in my life and where I needed to improve.

What is the Level 10 Life?

The Level 10 Balanced Life Check-up is extremely effective for being able to stand back and take a bird’s-eye view of your life, and to see where your attention needs to go.

Whether you’re in the midst of a complete life overwhelm, or you just want to conduct a personal development ‘check-up’, it’s a simple way to:

· review the most important areas of your life and how they fit together,

· get clear on your ideal for each important life area (your level 10),

· identify what is and isn’t working for you, & then

· work out what steps you need to take to make it happen.

How to use the Balanced Life Check-Up:

1. The Level 10 Life Categories (The Most Important Life Areas)

To keep it as simple and effective as possible (I know you’ve got a lot to get done today!), I chose 8 of the most important areas of life that apply to most people:

Important Life Areas

2. What would a 10 out of 10 be for you?

In each important life area, take some time to think about what your ‘ideal’ state would be.

  • How do you want to feel?
  • How do you want to live?
  • What do you want to do? To have? To enjoy?

3. Where Are You Now? The Wheel of Life Concept

The ‘wheel of life’ concept has been around for a long time and has been talked about by many of the top personal development experts, in various forms and levels of complication.

The idea is that the ‘wheel of life’ is made up of the most important life areas and that the wheel will only effectively ‘turn’ when all of these life areas are balanced.

If they aren’t, you will experience lumps and bumps along the road – making for a more difficult journey in life.

Go ahead and rate your current level of happiness with each life area from 1 to 10 (10 being your ‘ideal state’). Is your wheel balanced? Or a bit out of ‘whack’ like mine was?:

4. Review the gaps between where you want to be & where you are now

What’s working well so far? Take some time to be grateful for what is going well in your life.

Next, look at your wheel for the areas that require some attention from you. What do you need to stop or start doing in order to improve this area?

The Benefits of Striving for A Balanced Life

While we hear the term ‘work/life balance’ used a LOT, the concept of an overall ‘balanced life’ is not so widely talked about. However, it’s so important to our overall level of happiness, mental and emotional wellbeing.

By looking at your life as a whole of all the separate (but most important) areas, you will become more self-aware and grateful of all those things that are going well in your life.

It will also become clearer where your focus needs to go in order to improve those areas of your life that could be better. Therefore, creating a more balanced life.

Creating balance in your life has many benefits, including:

· Reducing stress levels and overwhelm

· Gaining a sense of control over life, moving from just a ‘surviving’ approach to a concept of ‘thriving’.

· Clearer focus and direction towards what’s important to you. You will be able to allocate your limited resources (time, money and energy) more effectively.

Not to mention that reducing stress and worry has many flow-on benefits in life, such as better health and the ability to be more present with our loved ones.

Now, who doesn’t want that?

What to do from here:

Once you have completed your initial Balanced Life Check-up and worked out your immediate action steps, it’s important to conduct a regular review.

Remember that these are all important areas of our life, and while some might not seem immediately urgent, there is always consequences for letting things lag in important life areas. Does your ‘self-care’ situation at a level 3 require immediate attention? (Raising my hand!)

Another area of life at a 6 might not seem urgent right now, but it’s so much easier to conduct regular ‘maintenance’ than to have to fix things when they become massive blow-outs.

Plus, all of the areas of life are important to create a balanced life (and all the benefits that come with it).

I’m currently finding that a quick review at the end of each month is a great way to keep on track with everything and set new priorities for the upcoming month.
